Determining the correct freight class for your LTL shipments may seem like a daunting task, especially when your materials fall into various classes and your loads are various sizes. Customers using AdvanceShip should rarely need to think about this. But, in case you still need to do it manually for example to write a paper bill of lading or better understand how it is determined follow along.

There are various tools that highlight the AdvanceShip functionality and you can use these tools to perform the task on your own.

Let’s get started. First, there is a class determination calculator built right in.

Via the AdvanceShip menu, select the Freight Class calculator, or use transaction code /ADVSYS/ASP_CALCFRTCLASS

Enter your values. You’ll need your NMFC item number, weight, length, width and height.

Press OK and the calculator will display the freight class determined, volume and the NMFC subcode, if applicable.

Next, from the Advance Ship menu, select the Order Based Freight Class.

Here, enter a delivery number or shipment number and select Execute.

order based freight inquiry

This nifty tool determines the freight class based on the materials, handling units, etc., in your delivery or shipment. It uses the data already present in your document to return the freight class or classes determined. An important tip is that this tool is basically the same code executed when AdvanceShip generates your bill of lading.

We hope this was helpful. If you have questions, drop us a note.
